NOTE: This story was taken from the blog of Foundations Health leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of his facilities in different roles such as housekeeping, or as a nursing assistant, to bring A Culture of Care.

I had the opportunity to go back to The Home at Taylors Pointe the other day and work as an STNA with Frances Brown, one of the first STNA's I first worked with when I started my STNA journey. The reason I wanted to go back to Taylors and work with Frances is that on August 15th and 16th of this year we are having 58 STNA's from across Ohio come to Columbus for our first annual STNA Summit. All 58 of these STNA's are ones that I had the privilege of working within our various facilities. We talked a little about our corporate culture to get some insight into if that culture is catching on.

The purpose of the Summit is NOT for us to train the STNA's on anything but rather for our corporate decision-makers from various departments to listen and get feedback from the STNA's on how to better improve our company. Everything from the products and equipment we are purchasing to recruitment and retention.

Fundamental to our company's success is our Culture of Care. Understanding that culture is a group of people with a common set of values and beliefs, we need to live out and reinforce what we value and believe constantly. We need to live out our Mission Statement and Core Values every day as an organization. We need to hire by those values. Some people just aren't a good fit for our company.

I asked the STNA's to read our Mission Statement and Core Values and be prepared to discuss at the Summit about what they mean to them. Frances said this about our Culture of Care: "It means we care for your loved ones as if they were our own. We're here to be the companion they lack, the caregiver they look at as dependable, or the comfort they need when things get them down. We as a team can help, not only our residents, have a brighter day, but our co-workers. When we put our all into the care we give, the results are more than words can explain."

Frances gets it! That is exactly our Culture of Care. I'm excited beyond words about the upcoming STNA Summit. We have a fantastic team of caregivers and I couldn't be prouder of our Company and our Culture!

"If you get the culture right, most of the other stuff, like delivering great customer service or building a long-term brand or business, will just be a natural byproduct."
